A GROUP of Scarborough schoolgirls are aiming to raise hundreds of pounds for a national cancer charity.

Eight friends are raising awareness and funds for the Teenage Cancer Trust and are organising various fundraising events.

The girls, aged 12 and 13, have set themselves a "five week challenge" to see how much money they can raise for the charity.

They were fundraising in the town centre on Saturday where they wore pyjamas and dressing gowns and spoke to shoppers about the charity.

Thirteen-year-old Jemma Martin, of Eastfield, said: "My best friend's sister has just been diagnosed with cancer and we wanted to raise money for the Teenage Cancer Trust which is specifically for young cancer sufferers.

"We want to raise as much money as possible for the charity."

The girls, from George Pindar Community Sports College, will be holding a car washing session at the school on Saturday and hope to plan more fundraising events over the next few weeks.

Teenage Cancer Trust is a charity devoted to improving the lives of teenagers and young adults with cancer.
