A NEW sports village is central to plans to build 150 homes as part of a scheme involving three prominent Scarborough sites.
The homes are likely to be split between the old McCain Stadium site in Seamer Road and the Filey Road sports centre.

New sports facilities would then be built at Weaponness Valley coach park.

The plans, which have a timescale of up to five years, were detailed in Scarborough Council's Draft Housing Allocations Development Plan Document.

The document states: "The redevelopment of these sites would provide both housing as well as improved sports facilities for the town and a new home for the town's football club.

"The specific designation of each site is yet to be determined. However, subject to the relocation of the football ground and the sports centre, these sites could provide a good opportunity to accommodate a reasonable number of dwellings.

"An example would be a sports village with a public sports centre, football club and other ancillary facilities at Weaponness coach park, allowing the redevelopment of both the existing sports centre and football ground."

The council plans to sell off the McCain Stadium, the former home of Scarborough FC, to developers.

Houses being built on the Theatre of Chips site.
Houses being built on the Sports Centre site.
A Sports Village at the coach park site.

Any bets we only get two of the above, and can anyone predict which two?

Just a thought but - why not build a football ground at McCains, a Sports Centre in Filey Road and 150 new houses at Weaponness Valley coach park?

Another pie orbits the Clown Hall. There already exists a Stadium, a Sports Centre and an area prime for development. Why waste more cash on Scarborough Town to the detriment of the hinterlands. Lets guess who will be chosen to develop!!

Errrmmm... I thought there was a covenant on the Seamer Road site preventing any use other than for sporting facilities? SBC refused to release this covenant thereby causing the football club to go bust and leave the site derelict for years. BUT, now that SBC own the ground it's suddenly ok to sell the site for developement. Doesn't sound right to me.

Reminds me of, 'One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest'.

Who comes up with these brain dead ideas that are unlikely to ever see the light of day.

Prime example 'The Sands', started in 1995 as Zenith.

Where are we today with it ?.

Oh - I, like many others regularly use the Sports Centre Gym.

Is it going to disappear?

Like #1 thinks I'm sure we will get the houses - and Filey Road is a valuable site and will be worth a lot of money to a private developer (and his mates on the council!!), but I bet any money we don't get the Sports Facilities - they don't make money for developers (and their mates on the council)

Incidentally, but a bit off topic - SEN actually ran a story which showed some investigative journalism yesterday. Well done chaps! I hope you won't lose your nerve.

A dream scenario 5-10 years, make that 10-15 in reality, anything can happen or NOT in that time. The b2boro campaign should take this a green light to go their own way and start saving money and build their own proper football stadium, with their own ground they will be able to generate cash through food and wet sales whereas at a council owned ground they will just pay rent turn up for 90 mins and go home. This is disappointing as crowds will surely go down with a homecoming so far in the distance.

Why cant we get the new facilities first before the houses go up ? simple answer really there wont be any money to build the facilities after the cant sell the houses. Dont they know that there is a credit crunch on at the moment

If there are any houses to be built on this land then the local housing associations should be given first chance to do so instead of being 'outbid' by private developers, there are far too many people on these housing lists still waiting for acommodation and they still will be if private developers get their hands on it.
