SCARBOROUGH'S Futurist Theatre has been saved for another year after receiving a major financial boost.
Theatre bosses have been handed a £100,000 cash lifeline by Scarborough council for the venue to continue operating in 2010 while the Spa Grand Hall is closed for refurbishment, including a bigger stage.

But no decision has been made on financial arrangements for the Futurist for 2011.

The news follows the announcement of a £6 million renovation of Scarborough Spa Complex, including the Grand Hall, which will close the venue for 11 months.

Futurist operator Barrie Stead said he was delighted its immediate future had been aided.

He said: "The Futurist is the jewel in Scarborough's crown and we are very pleased with the council's help because without it we would have had to close on December 31, that is how serious it was.

"We are coming up to seven years running the venue now and it is nothing like any other theatre in the country. We have brought some great shows and are open the full year which is a remarkable achievement because of the expense.

"It would have been very sad to hand the keys back and we now hope to get a programme for next year and give the people of Scarborough the kind of theatre they deserve."

Mr Stead, who runs the venue with his wife and business partner Brenda, said the theatre's constant financial worries had forced them to miss out on acts in the past.

"There have been situations where companies have enquired about coming to Scarborough but they plan their shows two or three years in advance which we cannot do, so they take them elsewhere.

"However we do still manage to attract big names such as Rob Brydon and Jack Dee and these really help the economy with a lot coming from out of town and spend money in Scarborough."

A little common sense at last. As Barrie Stead says, guarantees for upto 3 years need to be in place to attract the big acts. Its time SBC gave these guarantess and stopped wasting money on the tram shed spa, which has a theatre that will never attract big acts. Interesting two other articles today. One says SBC are giving 2 million to the spa, the other says their income is 400 thousand short. Put all this together and it's an absolute no-brainer !!!!

Note 'Theatre bosses', does this just mean Barry Stead and his partner wife or does it now mean those and Tony Peers who moves into the Futurist for the 2010 season ?.

£100,000, well that simply works out at the normal £60,000 for Mr. Stead and Tony Peers has been handed £40,000 to run his end of the pier shows.

The bigger question is how are Mr. Stead's bookings going to gel with Tony Peers seasons show ?. Cannot be bad when the council hand you £40,000 to run your own show !!!.

No wonder the indoor leisure is showing a deficit !!!

SBC as already stated are now totally reliant on the £4 million funding from Yorkshire Forward to carry on with it’s pie-in-the-sky Spa project.

I personally hope to be in a position along with, I hope, many other council tax payers and approach YF and object most strongly their squandering of public money on a project that is not in the interest of local tax payers and will cause financial hardship for the boroughs residents for many years to come, entirely due to the massive annual subsidies that they will, as in the past, have to find.

Of course Mr. Stead is happy - who wouldn't be, being handed £100000? The reality is he is running a business, the same as hundreds of people in the Borough of Scarborough, who don't receive a penny in subsidy. As for Tony Peers, he is well past his sell by date and should not be paid a penny.

#9 correct.

But are there enough days in the week for all the shows that are shown at the Futurist, The Tony Peers productions and the films or are we going to lose some of the choice while Mr Stead and Peers get more of our cash for less work?
