A SHOW depicting the rise of popular music from 1890 to 1990 returns to the Spa Ocean Room on Wednesday 17 September, at 7.45pm.
Greatest Tunes from the Famous Bands, by Jazz Legend, has proved popular with local audiences.

Clarinettist and saxophonist Graham Quilter says: "Many of our audience members have seen the show more than once since we first put it together in 2006.

"We always change a few tunes around, usually discovering and adding landmark pieces of music to highlight their influence on our rich history of modern music."

Graham is one of three members of Jazz Legend who are also in the Spa Orchestra. "Our daily Spa audience members are fascinated by the origin of the wide variety of music we play," he says. "For this Jazz Legend performance, Tony Turner, our trombone player and narrator, has researched the whole history of the development of jazz and swing music to deliver it in one single show. We have been delighted with the audience response and offer a warm welcome to anyone who has yet to experience the most interesting music lesson they will ever have. Bring the whole family if you like."

The idea for the show began when Graham bought a library of music from a North East bandleader who had decided to retire. Graham and his wife, Kathy Seabrook, invited a group of local professional musicians to play through the music and Tony, a former music teacher who was sitting in on bass at the time, suggested that the library seemed to contain some of the landmark tunes in the development of jazz. Tony offered to put the show together around these tunes, and with the help of music arranger Simon Coles, the seven musicians now have two popular musical shows being performed at the Spa this summer.

Besides Graham and Tony, the band members are Bob Malinowski on bass, Lee Adams on drums, Nigel Blenkiron on trumpet, Steve Brooke on piano and Kathy Seabrook on vocals, flute, tenor saxophone and banjo.
