The Doncaster Wheatsheaf Singers, formed in 1950, will perform at South Cliff Methodist Church on Saturday August 30 and at the Spa the following day.

Over the years the 23-voice choir have appeared many times on radio and television.

They have shared the stage with many famous celebrities including Kiri Te Kanawa, Harry Secombe and Moira Anderson.

As their fame spread, so did the locations of their concerts and since their first trip abroad in 1956 the choir have found themselves in popular demand worldwide.

The most exciting tour was in 1994 when it was invited to sing in South Carolina, USA. Other countries visited include Ireland, France, Spain, Sweden, Holland, Germany, Austria, Switzerland and Hungary.

The musical repertoire is vast by any standards with music ranging from negro spirituals, songs from the shows and arranged pop classics to extracts from Handel’s Messiah and classical choral works such as Schubert’s Ave Maria.

Memorising music to improve the singing standard has remained a trademark of the choir and sheet music is never used at concerts.

Chairperson and secretary Dorothy Miller says: “We used to be regulars at the Spa and did a summer season at the Futurist. But we haven’t been to Scarborough for about eight years so we’re looking forward to the two concerts.”
