Glenn Miller concerts at the Spa

TWO big bands playing the unforgettable music of Glenn Miller can be seen at the Spa Grand Hall over the next week.
The coincidence arose after the death of veteran broadcaster Humphrey Lyttelton, who was booked to return to the Spa next Wednesday.
The Nick Ross Orchestra was booked to fill the slot, despite it being just four days after Todd Miller and the Joe Loss Orchestra's concert, on Saturday.
However, neither ensemble focuses exclusively on the legendary bandleader's repertoire.
Promoter Jan Jagger says the Todd Miller band is "Britain's most popular orchestra of the past 50 years, enjoying world tours, live TV performances on BBC1 and Sky, and broadcasts on Radios 1 and 2.
"Their signature tune, In the Mood, is still among the most popular and most played instrumentals of all time," says Jan.
She says the band was formed 75 years ago and is "Britain's longest running live entertainment company of any kind.
"Since 1930 the orchestra has never been disbanded and reformed", Jan says. "It has been in constant operation throughout the world,
with Britain's best musicians and singers performing totally live."
Joe Loss took a raincheck in 1989 when he became too ill to travel. Todd – no relation to Glenn – became leader in 1990, the year Joe died.
"His vocal prowess and versatility have received acclaim from many eminent professionals from within the music industry and most
importantly, from audiences and fans around the world," Jan says. "Todd is best appreciated live on stage, interacting with the audience, singing songs in any style from any era and making it sound just right."
He has perfomed at two royal weddings and on 14 world tours and all the UK's main TV channels and radio stations, says Jan.
The band's large repertoire includes the music of Glenn Miller, Count Basie, Artie Shaw, Duke Ellington, Harry James, Frank Sinatra,
Ella Fitzgerald, Tony Bennett, Doris Day, Elvis Presley, Bill Haley, Chuck Berry, Johnny Cash, Shirley Bassey, Ray Charles, the Beatles, the Searchers, Dusty Springfield, Matt Monroe, Tom Jones, Abba, Neil Diamond, Barbara Streisand, Lional Richie, the Bee Gees, Kool and the Gang and Andrew Lloyd Webber.
Starting with the murmured notes of Moonlight Serenade, the Nick Ross Orchestra promise "an unmissable evening of music and song with the classic big-band sound of the 1940s".
Promoter Emma Barnard says: "A selection from the repertoires of Glenn Miller, Count Basie, Tommy Dorsey and Ted Heath will be featured and our concert would not be complete without reference to the songbooks of Frank Sinatra and Ella Fitzgerald.
"Recapture the sounds and memories of a bygone era."
Nick says: "Our special guest vocalist will be Matthew Ford, who is from the same mould as the classic singers - Matt Monro, Tony Bennett and Frank Sinatra. He has formidable natural talent in front of a live audience.
