AN orchestra and choir are teaming up for a charity sing-along of Gilbert and Sullivan's Pirates of Penzance next month.
It follows similar renditions of Mikado and HMS Pinafore, and the Stephen Joseph Theatre’s successful recent production of Pirates.
The Sandside Orchestra will play and members of Graham Community Choir and Pure Chance Musicals will sing.
As be
fore, the audience will be asked to sing in the choruses, as rollicking pirates or the modern major-general’s demure daughters. Fancy dress is encouraged, to add atmosphere.
Conductor and organiser Bill Scott hopes for a good turn-out. “Our previous productions attracted good audiences and fun was had by all. You don’t have to sing, although it is great fun to join in. Just come and enjoy the informal performance.”
The leading roles will be performed by local singers including Lesley Machin as Mabel, Kathryn Irwin as Ruth, Mick Tiffany as Frederick, Dave Blaker as the Pirate King, Matt Straddling as Major-General Stanley and Roger Maughan as Samuel. Sue Brownridge and Kate Boddy will make up the cast in the roles of Stanley’s daughters.
The songs include such favourites as A Modern Major-General, Poor Wandering One and A Policeman’s Lot is Not a Happy One (sung by Don Kynman).
The event is to be staged at Graham School on Saturday March 20, at 7pm.
There will be a short rehearsal at the school on the day, from 12.30pm to 1.30pm.
Half the proceeds will go to local soldier Tom Davis-Lawlor, who was injured in Afghanistan. The rest will help pay for Pure Chance Musicals’ next show.
The appeal to raise money for Tom is being coordinated by the mayor, Cllr Bill Chatt, who will attend the performance and accept the donation.
Graham School head Garry Hancock says: “We are delighted to sponsor this event and are particularly keen to help Tom, an ex-Raincliffe School pupil, in any way we can.”
Tickets cost £4 and an extra £1 if a score is required. They will be available on the evening and in advance from the school.
