THE Sally Doherty Quartet and General Cluster will play for Scarborough Jazz at the Cask tonight and next Wednesday respectively.
The Sally Doherty Quartet is “an excellent band [with] faultless intonation and taste from Sally, sounding equally at home in Portuguese, Spanish and English,” says eminent jazzer Alan Barnes, reviewing Sally’s ninth album.
“The singing is not onl
y technically accomplished, but very beautiful, and Sally manages to make these songs her own.
“This new album of mainly Latin jazz from Sally features an inspired choice of material. All the tracks are superbly arranged and produced and the sound quality is exceptional. This release will appeal to a wide spectrum of listeners well beyond the usual jazz fans.”
Promoter Mike Gordon adds: “Sally’s songs slip effortlessly from gentle ballads to Brazilian bossa nova and samba, then from swing to Mexican and Cuban boleros.”
Jazz fans can expect “stunning backing from Piero Tucci (piano and accordion), Colin Elliot (double bass) and Phil Johnson (drums)”.
Sally, from Sheffield, has been involved in many collaborations with, among others, Italian dance outfit Planet Funk. She recently sang with the Mercury music prize nominee Richard Hawley on his new album, Lady’s Bridge.
General Cluster consists of an architect, a financial adviser, a university music lecturer, an artist, an ex-educationalist and a professional bass player – all with a passion for jazz and much experience of playing it.
Charlie Parker, Quincy Jones, Shorty Rogers and Antonio Carlos Jobim classics are on the menu and original material by saxophonist and clarinetist Steve Whitehead.
Although this popular band plays very tight arrangements of jazz standards and original compositions, there is a great emphasis on instrumental improvisation.
