Vancouver 2010 - Review
The 2010 Winter Olympics are almost here, and as is customary, a videogame version is now available.
Vancouver 2010 is SEGA's latest attempt to capture the essence of the olympics. Those who have played 'Olympics' games in the past will have no trouble slipping into the time honoured fashion of button bashing and timed button pressing.
Most of the games are fairly straightforward, using one or two button controls, and the pick up and play factor is as high as ever. The Challenge Mode gives you extra play, giving you a batch of challenges to complete in Easy, Intermediate and Advanced difficulties.
Most of the events in Vancouver 2010 are lots of fun, although getting the gold in these events may require a few practice runs. The difference in difficulty levels between a Silver and Gold, is wider than many people would like. You will need to learn the absolute details of each event to succeed.
While frustrating at first, this ultimately increases the depth of the game, forcing you to retry events while shaving those vital seconds off your time.
The graphics in Vancouver are very good indeed, feeling crisp and colourful, and the characters look very convincing. The sense of speed on certain events - such as bobsled and luge - is done well enough here, although nothing mind-blowing, with the usual 'blurring' effect being the order of the day.
The usual online features are on offer, with Leaderboards keeping track of best times and scores for each event, with all events being available for online multiplayer.
In truth, Vancouver does what it says on the tin, and it does it very well. However, there is only ever going to be a certain amount of replay value for 'Olympics' games.
This could get very tedious without an internet connection, as the online multiplayer is where you will have the most fun.
I do think there could have been more events available, almost certainly more popular events - figure skating, biathalon to name two - however for fans of previous incarnations and track and fields, this is a worthy purchase.
For the more casual gamer, some good multiplayer fun can be found here, and to be honest, there is not much else on the shelf that offers that right now.
OVERALL SCORE - 7.5 - 10 Does what it should and does it well, both graphically and phsyically. The multiplayer aspect is pretty much the only true reason to rush out and purchase this game. Only die hard fans should consider this as a single player.
