THIS WEEK: The Glass House – Cafe and Bistro, Northstead Manor Gardens

A brilliant cafe in wonderful surroundings, situated in Northstead Manor Gardens opposite the newly built Miniature Rail-way Station and shop, The Glass House is at last a great asset to the North Bay.

So-called because of its glass frontage, it has a classy interior with a dcor of burgundy and white, brown wooden tables with cushioned chairs, modern-art panels adorning the walls and a white crockery set to complement it all. An open plan kitchen is set at one side of the caf with the service counter to separate it from the seating area.

Where possible local produce is used for all the meals. The quite extensive menu consists of breakfast 2.50-5.95, starters 3.95, ciabattas/baguettes/sandwiches 3.95-4.95, salads 6.95-7.50, jacket potatoes 3.95-5.25, main meals 6.95 and sweets 1.20-2.75.

Beverages include quite an assortment of coffees and teas, smoothies, juices and soft drinks. Licensed bottled beers and an extensive wine list are available.

We originally ordered the steak pie and a lasagne, coming with a choice of either chips or jacket potato, and side salad. After ordering though, a waitress approached the table to tell us that they had run out of lasagne, so I opted for the homemade cheeseburger instead. As we had gone for a late lunch we put this down to the lasagne being exceptionally good, as were the two meals that we had ordered.

We also had Catherine with us and after an initial disappointment that there was no pasta on the children's menu, she made do with the half jacket potato and baked beans. Other options for the children's menu include sausage, chicken nuggets (both with chips) and a child-size pizza. The meal itself comes with a choice of either strawberry, chocolate or vanilla ice-cream, lollipop and a Thomas the Tank Engine fruit juice.

Opening times for the caf are 10.00am to 5.45pm, seven days a week, and the bistro 6.30pm till late (last orders at 9.00pm) seven days a week throughout July and August and then Thursday, Friday and Saturday evenings the rest of the year.

The menu for the bistro include starters from 3.95; homemade soup of the day, tiger prawn cocktail or pepper poached eggs. Main courses range from 7.95-15.00; 8oz rib-eye steak, medallions of pork in a honey mustard sauce or grilled salmon sauted in lemon and garlic. A selection of desserts are also available.

There are two toilets, including a disabled toilet incorporating the baby changing facilities.

Altogether a very enjoyable meal in delightful surroundings, with smartly dressed and attentive staff. Finally someone has had the initiative to take a really good attraction that's already there and just vastly improve it.
