THIS WEEK: Debenhams, Brunswick Shopping Centre

Trying to reach this week's cafe tasting venue proved more of a challenge than we expected. Situated on the first floor of Debenhams, getting to the restaurant with a buggy means using the one lift that the Brunswick Shopping Centre has between these levels as the other entrance is out of action during the renovations.

Unfortunately, patience not being one of my virtues, I would have given up and gone somewhere else if it had not been for the review. Eight minutes later, the lift finally arrived with enough room to squeeze in, just as I was considering performing an illegal manoeuvre involving a pram, a grumpy baby and an escalator.

By the time we entered the restaurant, I was a little fraught, so the cooling air conditioning came as a welcome relief. The dining area is clean, light and spacious with plenty of access for the disabled or those with pushchairs in tow. We were meeting friends and we managed to fit round a couple of tables without causing too much disruption. No mean feat when you total seven plus two buggies and two

highchairs.

For us, one of the highlights of the cafe is the excellent facilities it provides for those with small children, including: highchairs; a microwave; bottle warmers; free bibs; wipes and pots for warming up baby food.

The restaurant offers a good choice of hot meals, light bites and snacks. Although the hot food smelt enticing, we opted for a scone, chocolate cake and hot chocolate and after whizzing around the efficient counter service were soon back at our tables tucking in.

The hot chocolate was delicious, really chocolaty and smooth – tasting like it was made from real chocolate and not just reconstituted cocoa powder. Unfortunately, in comparison, the cakes were pre-packaged and a little disappointing.

The chocolate cake tasted dry and slightly stale, while the cheese scone wasn't very cheesy and needed plenty of butter to give it some more flavour. I think Tom probably summed it up best when he said that his chocolate muffin was "ok, but nothing out of the ordinary".

However, saying that, we would definitely come back again to try some of the hot meals and snacks on offer. The service was really friendly, the children's facilities are definitely some of the best in town and the clincher – it serves a decent hot chocolate!
