THIS WEEK: Yew Tree Cafe, High Street, Scalby

The Yew Tree Cafe is like a jewel situated in the heart of the sleepy village of Scalby. From the outside you could be mistaken into thinking that this is just a local village cafe, a place for residents to enjoy a nice cup of tea some conversation and company. Yet, as you walk through the door you soon realise that this cafe is Scalby's hidden secret.

From the moment we entered the front door, the Yew Tree Cafe welcomed

us with open arms, almost like an old friend. The atmosphere was warm and cosy and felt almost like home from home.

We arrived just after 12 noon as the caf was starting to fill up and the 12.00–2.00pm lunch menu began. We were greeted enthusiastically at

the door and shown to a spotlessly clean table that could accommodate both us and our babies. As the four of us take up quite a bit of room this involved switching some reserved tables around to make us more comfortable.

It was just a small touch, but one that made us feel really welcome and set the high standard of customer care we experienced during our meal.

The smells that were coming from the kitchen made us instantly hungry and we found ourselves eagerly searching the menu and specials board in anticipation as to what they could be.

The cafe, although fairly small in size, managed to accommodate a number of people during our time there, all of whom looked to be

thoroughly enjoying themselves and there seemed to be a real buzz about the place.

We both agreed that it felt wrong to order flavoured

coffees this week and so we embraced the village atmosphere and cosy tea room environment and ordered two pots of tea, a toasted teacake and some wholesome home- made soup.

The teacakes were toasted perfectly, covered in warm melted butter and tasted fruity and delicious and washed down with a nice cup of tea, felt like an absolute treat! The hearty tomato and vegetable soup was tasty and was topped with a drizzle of herb (basil?) oil. It also came with a generous portion of baguette and lashings of real butter, a real treat for butterholics like us.

This cafe does not need any ultra modern decorations to entice the customers as the sheer quality of the home cooked food coupled with the friendly and efficient service is all that is needed to ensure that the Yew Tree holds an outstanding reputation. This week's cafe tasting was an absolute joy and a return visit is imminent!
