THIS WEEK: The Glass House Bistro, next to North Bay Railway, Peasholm

We stumbled across the Glass House while out walking one sunny afternoon and like Alice with her looking glass we were both very curious to find out what it had to offer.

Situated by the North Bay Miniature Railway, The Glass House is tucked away from the busy main road with a display of tables and chairs, perfect for enjoying the summer sunshine. However, if dining 'alfresco' isn't your style then the caf invites you into the luxury and comfort of its ultra modern bistro.

Stepping inside, we were immediately impressed with its surroundings: rich, vibrant colours coat the walls and the sleek furniture and finishings create a stylish yet comfy eatery.

The Glass House is deceptive from the outside and we didn't realize just how spacious it was. We had enough room for three buggies (as our friend Debbie joined us this week) and all the accompanying paraphernalia, which is no mean feat! However, although the interior offers good access for disabled customers as well as those with buggies, the steps into the caf are difficult to negotiate and would perhaps benefit from a ramp.

After choosing a table by the window, we settled down to study the menu and this in itself took a while! With a fantastic choice of food and beverages that all screamed "eat me, drink me", we were stuck as to what to try! But, luckily for us the staff were happy for us to deliberate and made no effort to rush us into a hasty decision.

Eventually, we settled for a latte, an espresso and a hot chocolate. As it was fairly early on in the morning we opted for only one slice of caramel shortcake between us. Although after witnessing the delicious homemade food being delivered to the surrounding tables, we made a promise that we would return to try some of the tempting looking dishes for either a lunchtime treat or evening meal.

The generously sized coffees were quickly delivered to our table, complete with a complimentary chocolate each. They were all as delicious as they looked and because the atmosphere in the Glass House was so relaxed and friendly, we did something that we never usually do and ordered another drink.

We spent a lengthy time chatting and enjoying our cappuccinos and even though the caf was starting to fill around us we were never made to feel as though we had outstayed our welcome or under any pressure to vacate our table, all of which made for an extremely relaxing experience.

Although we are never usually ones to get over-excited about the toilets, we were really impressed by those at this caf! The Glass House harbours some of the best facilities we have seen for babies, with a changing mat, complimentary nappies (various sizes) and wipes, with plenty of space in which to manoeuvre!

Everything about this visit was top quality from the clean open plan kitchen where you can witness your food being prepared to the beautiful surroundings and the first class service.
