THIS WEEK: Pic-a-Dish, Falsgrave

A slightly different Cafe Tasters report this week – all the usual info about the cafe and an informative opinion, but without my good friend Tracey. She is unfortunately confined to barracks all week with a four-year-old with chicken pox!

This week I have another trusted companion and a very opinionated side kick in the shape of a five year old, my daughter, who may not know a good coffee from a bad coffee but is very honest, as most five year olds are!

We go into Pic-a-Dish in Falsgrave at about 3.45pm – it's completely empty. But we are greeted by a nice lady, obviously pleased to see us, although its past lunchtime, past afternoon cup of tea time and not quite tea-time, so I suppose it's not peak time! With that sorted out, at least we can sit exactly where we like. Quite an extensive menu and extremely reasonably priced, the counter where the cakes, sweets and quiches are displayed all look very tasty.

We order a coffee with fresh cream for myself which at 70p is great and very nice too, a toasted tea cake which comes hot and buttered. My trusted companion ordered a strawberry milkshake and a lovely looking bun from the glass cabinet (which now has finger marks on it) which she assures me is "yummy". But, no you can't have another one!

Still no-one else in the cafe, which is a shame, but with the lady "out the back" and busy, it gave me a chance to look properly at the menu. They do seem to have a very good variety of meals from full breakfasts, four course set lunches at 6.50, a good selection of hot and cold sweets and is open from early till 6pm so tea on the way home from town is an option. The children's section of the menu is very reasonable but only the usual burger, sausage, egg, beans all served with chips which is slightly disappointing, but the roast dinner is available in a children's portion. So, we had a lovely coffee, a tea cake, a milkshake and the "yummy bun", 3.95.

The cafe is extremely well kept and very clean. The only downside, no toilets, and the only other thing I noticed upon leaving was crumbs on the carpet – oh no, that's where we were sat! Come back, Tracey.
