THIS WEEK: North Bay Cafe, North Marine Road, Scarborough

Inspired by the sudden appearance of blue skies and sunshine, we decided to make the most of the weather and get out and about with our buggies (well, you never know quite how long it will last). An energetic stroll around Peasholm Park left us ravenous for refreshment so we were pleased to discover the North Bay Café situated on North Marine Road.

From the outside, this caf looks bright and cheery and probably welcomes many a tourist during the seasonal holidays. Once inside we discovered that it was too tricky to bring in both prams as there was little room to manoeuvre and we were blocking the aisles, so we abandoned one in the back of the car and made ourselves at home. As usual, we opted for a table by the window and this was clean and tidy with an open view across to the Indoor Bowling centre.

The caf seemed busy with regular customers who seemed to know each other and stopped to make time and conversation with each other and us. This gave the caf a warm and friendly atmosphere that made us feel really welcome.

The menu was varied and offered a traditional caf selection, ranging from toasted sandwiches and jacket potatoes with fillings to fish and chips and a full English breakfast. The breakfast appeared to be very popular and certainly looked value for money.

We opted for two milky coffees, a bowl of rhubarb crumble and custard and a toasted cheese sandwich. The crumble tasted sweet and slightly stodgy without the contrasting sharp tang that we were expecting from the rhubarb. Because of this, we didn't think it could be homemade although on the plus side the portion was generous and it came with lashings of hot custard. Disappointingly the toasted sandwich arrived with only a couple of plain crisps as a garnish and not the side salad and chips as advertised. The service, however, was friendly and efficient, and we are certain that if we had pointed this out, the situation would have been quickly rectified.

One thing that caught our attention with having the children with us was that the toilets were downstairs, which could have caused a slight problem had we been on our own. Not an ideal situation for changing facilities or disabled access.

Overall, the North Bay Caf offers a good selection of snacks and beverages at a reasonable price – much needed during the 'credit crunch' and is in a handy location when out and about on the North Bay, it offers an ideal 'pit stop' for refueling!
