THIS WEEK: Falling Foss tea garden, Midge Hall, Sneaton, nr Whitby

WE DECIDED to have a trip further afield for this week's review for Cafe Tasters as, for a change, the sun was shining down upon us.

This tea room is situated in Midge Hall, a unique property which nestles in the woodland at the top of the magnificent Falling Foss waterfall, one of my favourite places in this area.

Apparently the cottage was built as a game keeper's cottage by Sir James Wilson in the 1780s but Midge Hall subsequently became a welcome retreat to ramblers and day trippers alike as "Mrs Robinson's Tea Garden" in the early 1900s.

After years of being derelict it is now fully renovated, and is run by Jack and Steph as a tea garden. This is a truly magical place.

The tea garden offers delightful sandwiches and delicious cakes and drinks on its daytime menu but also caters for individual needs with notice and parties upon special request.

They also host fairy trails and Easter bunny trails for children's parties in the nearby forest which will delight any child.

While in the area a must is a visit to the famous Hermitage, a unique hermit's cave carved out of stone, or just relax with a cup of tea while the children paddle in the beck and play pooh sticks on the footbridge (pooh sticks provided!)

The tea gardens are approximately 15 miles from Scarborough. From the Scarborough to Whitby road turn left onto the B1416 (signed Ruswarp), turn second left at Red Gates corner (signed Falling Foss). Car park is on the left after approximately mile. Footpath to Falling Foss (three minutes walk).

Our party enjoyed ham sandwiches which were served with a crisp side salad and crisps. The bread was utterly delicious. The sandwiches smelled delicious and lived up to their smell. The scones with jam and cream were wonderful, moist and freshly baked. My daughter adored the fairy cake, and the ginger cake also went down a treat with my husband.

The coffee was fresh and served in a cafetierre and the hot chocolate was served with a piece of dark melting chocolate. The tea also went down a treat and served in a teapot with mugs.

The seating is outside in the garden (there are also seats available in the shade and undercover in the garden. There is also a large gazebo with a log burner and sofa, chairs and tables, and this can be used as part of the tea room but can also be booked for private parties. The toilet is in a converted shed but was easily accessible from the tea rooms and very clean.

This place is a real delight and a hidden gem and I would highly recommend it.

The prices are very reasonable: tea 1, coffee 1.30, hot chocolate 1.50, bacon sandwich 2.50, ham salad sandwich 2.50, fairy bun 80p, gingerbun 80p.

I would rate this caf five out of five.
