Samurai Shodown SEN - Review
Samurai Shodown SEN, the eleventh title in the popular Japanese series hits the Xbox 360 with thirteen familiar favorites from the previous titles along with bringing in eleven newcomers.
To celebrate the 17th anniversary of the franchise, SEN is the most brutal entry to date with high resolution 3D visuals.
Online matches are also available with a worldwide online ranking system to keep replay value high after mastering your character of choice.
With all the fighting titles that are currently, and soon to be, available for the 360 it really does comes down to personal preference.
Samurai Shodown SEN offers a lot of everything from the weapon based combat seen in Soul Caliber, brutal moves similar to mortal combat, while still holding true to the style and moves of the original Samurai Shodown titles.
The graphical update is a nice improvement, with 3D visuals of the character and detailed historic looking environments. Some may want to use an Arcade Fight Stick to play this, however it is easier to play with the Xbox controller.
The impressive roster of characters has something for every type of fighter, from speed to power to skilled and the brutal finishes for each are rewarding without being too over the top.
One thing gamers of this genre will notice is the speed of gameplay, it seems to be slower than most of the other recent titles out there.
The difficulty is on a par with other fighters, although the first of two bosses is incredibly tough. He wields a shotgun and if he starts unleashing the lead, its pretty much game over.
The online play, now a customary addition to any fighter, should be where the real fun can be had, showing off your moves and combos, and those hidden characters you have unlocked.
Unfortunately, however, finding a match does take some time, but this may well change in the coming weeks.
Overall, Samurai Shodown SEN is a solid fighter which will have fans of the franchise very happy, but may not reach too many outside of that group. With lots of moves and combos to learn, and a host of characters to unlock, there is a lot of replay value, of which there would be more had the online community been larger. SEN still offers all the features that make the more popular fighters what they are.
