BOOKS, the BBC on-screen news text, and, we must admit, newspapers too, are no strangers when it comes to literal errors.
The news media could claim that their speed of production gives them some excuse, but many readers don't accept that, and they have a fair point.
But almost every book these days has grammatical errors or spelling mistakes.
Some may say that such things are not as important as they used to be, and that the age of mobile texting will lead to more phonetic spellings among the younger generation. Ironically, English in its formative years was spelled with variation and phonetics.
But when it comes to permanent signs on public display, we could not but draw attention to the new blue plaque at Wood End, the former home of the Sitwell family, with the letter 'R' missing from the word Scarborough. This means a replacement having to be done.
But more importantly, as one of our readers pointed out, there should be immediate and re-open public access to the Sitwell Room legacy which is housed in the new excellent Wood End building. That is what the Sitwells would want.
