Stately home proves one of the sights to see
England’s Highclere Castle is all the rage at present as it features in the blockbuster TV series Downton Abbey.
But it is Castle Howard – another English stately home forever linked to a must-see television saga of old – that makes it into a world list of ultimate sights produced by travel guide company Lonely Planet.
The stately home, near Malton, featured in the blockbuster TV series Brideshead Revisited, and has been voted one of the world’s top 10 greatest mansions and grand houses.
On Castle Howard, the guide said: “Stately homes may be two a penny in England but you’ll have to try pretty hard to find one as breathtakingly stately as Castle Howard.”
The setting was used as the home of the fictitious Brideshead family created in Evelyn Waugh’s novel whose 1980s TV adaptation proved a forerunner – in popularity – for Downton Abbey.
