Special gift for the Captain
A SCARBOROUGH artist has presented punk legend Captain Sensible with an original caricature painting.
Douglas Gray, 42, of Sea Cliff Road, has painted stars ranging from Clint Eastwood to the Spice Girls, and decided to paint the Captain after meeting him at the former Talbot pub in Queen Street.
He said: “I met Captain Sensible during his gigs at the Talbot and thought he would make an ideal subject, with his trademark beret and glasses. The Captain went on to use the image for promotional purposes and this led to an approach by the Conservative party to sketch their then party leader, William Hague, and his wife. So from popstars to politicians it was an exciting time for me.
“I really enjoyed doing the caricature of the Captain and thought it was only fair that I gave him it back. I think the image defines that type of music.”
Mr Gray initially trained at Scarborough Technical College before achieving a Distinction in Illustration at Doncaster College of Art.
He began his creative career as a poster designer for Athena International, before concentrating on international advertising, attracting an array of US clients that included Pepsi and Universal Studios.
Captain Sensible stopped off in Scarborough to receive the painting after spending time at the Goth Weekend in Whitby.
He said: “I think it’s great – has it captured the real me? I’ve never done anything bad in my whole life! But when I put the beret on the monster appears.
“I think I’ll hang it in the loo – maybe the kids will use it as a dartboard.”
The Captain added that he always enjoys coming to Scarborough and likes to play on the slot machines at the seafront.
His most recent gig in Scarborough was with the rest of The Damned at Vivaz at the end of September. The band has performed here several times, at the Penthouse, the Stage Door and the Talbot.
Captain Sensible was born Ray Burns in 1955 and is best known for his 1982 solo number-one single Happy Talk.
