Sizzling season at SJT
THE Stephen Joseph Theatre has announced its summer season – the first under new artistic director Chris Monks.
Mr Monks, who has taken over from Sir Alan Ayckbourn, will direct two plays and has lined up a range of visiting and lunchtime shows as well as music.
The season opened on April 30 with Moonlight and Magnolias by Ron Hutchinson and directed by Mr Monks.
Set in 1939, the production is set in the week which could make or break Hollywood producer David Selznick's career.
On June 4, Ayckbourn's classic farce, How the Other Half Loves, returned to Scarborough.
The new in-the-round production will be directed by the author for the first time since its premiere 40 years ago.
Gilbert and Sullivan's The Pirates of Penzance is given a Reservoir Dogs twist in Monks' adaptation opening on July 2.
Cutlasses are exchanged for guns as pirates scowl behind dark glasses and rule the waves like a Mafia of the high seas.
The lunchtime shows are back at the theatre this summer with Spoonface Steinberg by Lee Hall from July 17.
Spoonface is an autistic child who has discovered that life is about middles not endings; and that even when you are in the darkest place there is still someone to sing a beautiful song.
Howard and Mimi by Caroline Gold opens on July 31 and focuses on Nick and Jane, who move in together. His dog comes with him so her cat has to make room.
Oxford Playhouse take audiences on a fast, furious and full-throttled trip to the moon in One Small Step from June 22 to 24.
A wide range of internationally acclaimed musicians will take to the stage this summer with Rachel Harrington making her debut at the theatre and a performance by leading Hang player Manu Delago Handmade.
Music in the Round presents a Family Concert, Giddy Goat when music will be provided by Ensemble 360 with narration by Polly Ives.
The Spa Orchestra returns to the theatre and there will be a chance to hear one of the world's great flamenco jazz guitar virtuosos Eduardo Niebla in concert with his trio.
Barb Jungr and her Musicians have also been booked as well as the James Taylor Quartet.
