Recycling deal grows by five years
FREE collections of broken electrical items from homes are set to continue for another five years.
Scarborough Council has signed a five-year deal with recycling firm RB Markets, renewing an arrangement begun in January 2010.
Previously, householders had to pay £22 to have unwanted or broken electrical items taken away.
To begin with, RB Markets was collecting about 10 tons of items per month, which rose to 30 tons at the last count.
The items are taken to a treatment facility in Eastfield, where working components are removed for reuse and the rest is scrapped.
The collections are designed to boost the recycling of waste electronic and electrical equipment in the borough of Scarborough.
Harry Briggs, the council’s recycling and waste enforcement manager, said: “This important partnership means we can provide a free service, while helping us all to work together to recycle more and protect the environment for the future.
“This contract delivers significant savings to residents while maintaining our current service provision. We are hoping to build on this agreement and see more waste recycled than ever.”
