Raven take flight to Woodend
AFTER a sell-out gig at Sawdon's Anvil Inn on Sunday, Raven will roost at Woodend Creative Industries Centre on Saturday.
"We will perform tracks from our new CD Rising Sap as well as traditional festive music including The Boars Head Carol, Gaudete and In Dulci Jubilo," says Jaye Lewis, of the black flock.
"We will also perform a couple of new songs which we have only sung once before, at Sawdon - a traditional African rain song and a new one from Sarah Dew about the magic of snow," says Jaye. "These songs are not on Rising Sap."
The sheer variety of songs and the beauty of their singing have firmly established Raven as unlike any other group around. Now they are taking a chance on a change of feel with their audacious new album.
Raven are an irrepressibly charming six-piece female combo who sing their hearts out with unbridled joy, freedom and love of life. The line-up includes guitar, ukulele, bass, drums, accordion, keyboard, penny whistle, flute and recorder.
Their numerous gig venues to date range from local festivals and village halls to the Stephen Joseph Theatre and Selby Abbey.
The album's title is taken from a slightly risqu track about desire, involving a young man, a milkmaid and some Jersey cows, but also serves as a metaphor for the shift in mood from its predecessor, the contemplative She Is Here (2008).
It has a lighter, warmer and more whimsical air, from the wistful pop of My Photograph and the rootsy Long Road to the cheeky salsa of Red Shoes, the tranquil Evening Song, the intensely personal Sunlight and the atmospheric Morgana. All retain more than a hint of classic Raven's impeccable ethereal harmonies.
Known for their natural musical togetherness, warmth and fun, Raven epitomise all that is fresh and exciting in modern music.
The show is due to begin at 7.30pm.
Wine and mince pies will be served throughout the evening.
Tickets cost 5 in advance (6 on the door) for Woodend and can be booked by ringing 07958 086891.
