Pupils go 'One Step Beyond'

MADNESS songs are sung in an ambitious school show at the Stephen Joseph Theatre next week.

The play isn’t about Madness but a band uses their songs to tell the story in a similar way to the West End Queen show We Will Rock You.

The show, called Madness, will be performed by about 65 Scalby School students aged 11-16.

It is two shows in one, with the plot developing in each performance according to a critical decision made early on by the main character.

The play then splits into two storylines following the alternative paths of the boy’s life as a result of the choice he makes.

The lead characters are played by Nathan Jenkins as Joe Casey, Lily Robinson as his girlfriend Sarah, Adam Crossley as his dad (who oversees the show, watching over his son), James Baxter as bad boy Reecey, and Sam Lenton and Andy Howson as Lewis and Emmo, Joe’s best mates who provide comic relief.

Besides the cast of 65, another five pupils are helping behind the scenes and some will join the SJT’s team of ushers.

An oil company, SeaBird Exploration, has sponsored the show to the tune of 2,000.

“We would also like to thank our many advertisers in the programme, in particular the Evening News, who have shown us great support,” says teacher and director Chris Taylor.

Madness can be seen at 7.30pm Thursday, Friday and Saturday, plus 2pm Saturday.

Tickets cost 8 for adults and 5 for children.
