Popular concerts resume
LESS than a month after the death of the main man, a popular series of lunchtime concerts is to resume.
A couple of days before pianist Vincent Billington died on January 6, his 2010 concerts were cancelled.
But now, his wife Maria, knowing it is what Vincent would have wanted, is recontinuing the shows, at the library on Thursdays.
The first one, tomorrow, will feature Staintondale pianist Frank James, who will play a varied programme ranging from the classics to jazz.
As a boy, Frank was a chorister at Winchester Cathedral and was educated at Sherborne School in Dorset, gaining a diploma in music.
Maria says: “He has taught many subjects, including music of course, at prestigious colleges, and has shown his versatility when performing in many fields, skipping effortlessly between the classical and jazz repertoire.”
The series continues with organist Howard Beaumont (Feb 11 and Apr 8), comedian Rod Taylor (Feb 18), bass Paul Hudson and Frank James (Feb 25), soprano Katharine Phillips and pianist David Phillips (Mar 4), singer Paul Wheater (Mar 11), violinist Phillip Mindenhall and Howard Beaumont (Mar 18), baritone John Mitchell and Frank James (Mar 25), The Verdi Story with tenor Martin Dunn, Maria Billington and Frank James (Apr 1), a literature festival event (Apr 15), former TV presenter Geoff Druett (Apr 22) and soprano Ione Cumming (Apr 29).
No charge is made for admission to the concerts but a collection is taken at the door to offset costs.
