Music legend Hank Williams to be celebrated at pub gig

THE songs of a US country legend will be sung at a Hank Williams night at the Tap and Spile tonight.

Williams (1923-53) was a singer-songwriter and musician who has become an icon of country music and one of the most influential persons and songwriters of the 20th century.

A leading pioneer of the honky-tonk style, he had numerous hit records and his charismatic performances and succinct compositions increased his fame.

According to Wikipedia, "His songbook is one of the backbones of country music and several of his songs are pop standards. He has been covered in a range of pop, gospel, blues and rock styles. His death at the age of 29 helped fuel his legend."

Tonight's performers will be Vince Townsend, Al Lawrence, John Hesp, Tom Townsend, Jesse Hutchinson, Rich Hodgson, Al Huntly and David Moss.
