Muriel reminded of time at station

MEMORIES of Scarborough in wartime came flooding back for many when a former WREN was in town to launch her new book.
Grandmother Muriel Davison, 89, was overwhelmed by the response at the signing at Waterstones, Westborough.
“I spoke to people whose relatives worked at the Y Station on Irton Moor, where I was based from 1943 to 1945.
“One customer’s mother was a teleprinter operator there at the same time as me,” she said.
John Kendrick, from Scalby, described how his mother Hilda Simpson worked the teleprinters between 1942 and 1945. Mrs Kendrick is now in a Scarborough residential home and is enjoying reading the wartime reminiscences.
A Wren’s Tale describes life in wartime Scarborough and the important role the wireless station had in collecting coded messages from German U-boats which were despatched to the secret decoding base at Bletchley Park in Buckinghamshire.
Mrs Davison, of Hook, Surrey, was a radio mechanic at the now-GCHQ centre.
