Jubilee art project needs your votes

ART work is to adorn the streets of Scarborough as part of a project to celebrate the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee.
The Scarborough Civic Society is running the ‘Paint the Town’ project, which will see replicas from some of Scarborough Art Gallery’s most popular paintings displayed in outdoor locations across the town to form a heritage art trail.
Residents in Scarborough are now being given the chance to choose which paintings are used.
The Society has drawn up a shortlist and is putting it to a public vote to decide which pictures will feature at eight different locations around the town. Voters can choose from two paintings selected for each site.
The eight locations are yet to be finalised but it is intended to place the reproductions at the original viewpoints used by the artists.
Adrian Perry, chairman of the Scarborough Civic Society, said: “Our ‘Paint the Town’ art project to celebrate the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee will see high quality reproductions of Scarborough’s artistic heritage paintings placed at eight locations across the town.
“The purpose of the project is to share Scarborough’s paintings as widely as possible and raise people’s awareness of them and the beautiful locations they were painted in.
“Much care and effort has gone in to selecting an initial group of pictures from the Scarborough Museums Trust collection.
“The principal selection criterion for the initial group was to find landscape, seascape and townscape views of Scarborough that, put together, would make a coherent art heritage trail.
“We would now like members of the public to help us make the final selection.”
The project is being co-ordinated with Scarborough Museums Trust and Scarborough Council, with the Society now on track to have the paintings in place by the summer following the allocation of a £9,900 Heritage Lottery Fund grant.

Well done Civic Sociey, amazing how so many voluntary groups are trying to improve this town and yet the council, who are supposed to protect and promote it just seem to do the opposite!
