Jazz event ends after 25-year run

ONE of the cultural highlights in the region’s calendar, the annual Pickering Jazz Festival, is to end after 25 years.

Organiser Wilson Heppletone said the event had been founded by local bassist Joe Passey, backed by a committee of family and friends. Ryedale Jazz Club owes its origins to Pickering Jazz Society, which has been based for many years at the Beansheaf pub on the Pickering to Malton road. Declining numbers has meant that the Ryedale club’s nights will be the only remaining regular trad jazz event in the area.

“Both Joe Passey and Dave Clitheroe, two of the great stalwarts, are no longer with us.”

However, the Pickering festival is going out in style with an impressive array of artists taking part from July 23 to 28 – Maine Street Jazz band, Dennis Armstrong’s Oliver Band, Mart Rodger Manchester Jazz, Amy Roberts’ Jazz, New Orleans Heat and Savannah Jazz Band.

Ryedale Jazz Club continues to meet at the Beansheaf each Wednesday night.

Scarborough Jazz Festival runs from September 28 to 30.
