Experienced jazz men at the Cask

PLAYING for Scarborough Jazz are Mick Donnelly tonight and Steve Parry next Wednesday, at the Cask.

Mick Donnelly, from Darlington, started playing sax when he was 11 and was soon performing professionally with local bands.

He moved to London to pursue his career. In the early days his music was rooted in rock 'n' roll and the blues, with King Curtis being a strong influence. But jazz giants like Richie Cole, David Sanbourne and Phil Woods were also making a strong impression on him.

Mick is a very busy musician with great experience in many genres, says promoter Dick Armstrong. He has toured and appeared on TV with Sammy Davis Jnr, Barry White, Tony Bennett, Ian Drury, Britney Spears, Lulu, Gene Pitney, Kiki Dee, Shirley Bassey, Sting, John Miles, the Spice Girls and Stevie Wonder.

However, he always finds time to play jazz and has performed with great jazz stars including Bobby Shew, Mark Nightingale, Alan Barnes, Bruce Adams, Steve Waterman, Andy Sheppard and Dave O'Higgins.

Trumpet player Steve Parry turned professional at the age of 17.

Since then he has become a session musician, appeared in West End shows, recorded radio and TV commercials and jingles, and performed with many jazz bands.

Steve has played at the Albert Hall, the O2 Arena, Glastonbury, Wembley and Ronnie Scott's Club.

He has written music for award-winning shows and played for NYJO and the Trinity College Big Band, and leads his own Big Band from Hell.

"With such a wide musical background, we can expect a rich and varied programme from Steve," says promoter Dick Armstrong.

Both gigs are free and will feature backing from the Mike Gordon Trio.
