Design guru gives lecture

SCARBOROUGH-BORN Richard Seymour, one of the world’s leading industrial designers, is to return to his home town next month to give an illustrated lecture.

The event to be held at the library, has been organised on behalf of The Friends Of Scarborough Art Gallery.

Co-founded in 1984 with Dick Powell, the prominent international design partnership Seymour Powell has established a worldwide reputation for innovation in product design over recent decades.

A former pupil of Scarborough Boys High School and student at the Technical College, Richard Seymour’s career in design has spanned over 30 years, working for such clients as BMW, Samsung, Nokia, ICI, Panasonic, Yamaha and Ford amongst many others.

A more recent high profile commission has been his involvement in the design of Sir Richard Branson’s Virgin Galactic spacecraft, expected to be launched within the next two years.

On his previous lecture visits to Scarborough in both 2005 and 2008, both events attracted capacity audiences.

Chairman of The Friends Of Scarborough Art Gallery, Paul McCabe said: “We are privileged to have such an eminent local designer to speak at our annual open meeting.

“The Friends are lively and enthusiastic people who care about art galleries and museums and the contribution which they make to our cultural life and heritage.”

The principal purpose of the group is to support and promote Scarborough Art Gallery and its collections of oil paintings, watercolours, prints and drawings which include notable examples depicting Scarborough and the surrounding area.

Mr Seymour’s talk entitled ‘Emotional Functionality’ is scheduled for 2.30pm on Monday, March 12 in the Concert Room at Scarborough Library.

Tickets for the event go on sale today, and are available at Record Revivals in Northway.
