Cresta present new plays
THE Cresta Players are about to return to Burniston with Two For the Show – two one-act plays about life, loss and lipstick.
Written by Sue Wilding, they will be performed at the village hall tonight, tomorrow and Friday, at 7.30pm.
The first play, Bohemian Like You, deals with a man who has lost his job and sits in a caf every day while his wife thinks he’s at work. His re-assessment of his life starts when a homeless woman plonks herself down at his table and refuses to move.
In the second play, Man, I Feel Like a Woman, a man has been having an affair and his wife has found out. Thinking on his feet, he thinks of an alibi. But it only leads him into more trouble.
Sue says: “These are new plays which haven’t been entered into any festivals as yet, so it will be interesting for us to see how local audiences like them.”
The plays are being directed by Cresta member Una Faithfull and guest director Aline Bliss, who has been successful at drama festivals with her company, Statement Drama.
When Cresta performed Sue’s full-length play Conversation with the Trees at the same venue in November, a lot of people went to see them, says Sue.
The company is having a good year. At Saltburn Drama Festival in March, John Halkyard, 15, won the award for best individual youth performance and and David Irwin was nominated for the best-actor award for his portrayal of an alcoholic. Sue Wilding, appearing in a Statement Drama production, took home the best-actress award.
David says: “We’re always on the look-out for new members. Anyone interested is welcome to come and have a chat with one of us after the play.”
Tickets cost 4 and can be bought at the post office in Burniston.
