Concert remembers Shadows legend Jet

A POPULAR Scarborough band are set to tune up for a huge gig in honour of a guitar legend.
The Scarborough-based Shadows Music will be playing a special charity concert in memory of Jet Harris MBE.
Mr Harris, who was a founder member and bass guitarist for The Shadows alongside Sir Cliff Richard, died in March last year after battling cancer.
Mr Harris performed at the Futurist Theatre in 2010 and was due to return the following year after throwing his support behind the campaign to save the historic venue.
Ian Harper, a spokesman for Shadows Music, said the band wanted to hold the Memorial Fund event to remember a real musical hero and to help other sufferers of cancer.
He also confirmed they will be joined on the night by sister band Legend with all of the performers being members of The Shadows Guitar Club.
He added: “We very much want to do all we can for this very special charity with all proceeds going to the fund.
“Jet sadly died from cancer of unknown primary and the fund is in support of Cancer Research UK.
“Jet was a real hero to us and was due to visit the Futurist Theatre again and was very supportive of the campaign to save it.”
The original bass guitarist for The Shadows, Mr Harris played on some of the group’s biggest hits including Apache, FBI, Man of Mystery and Wonderful Land.
He also starred in The Young Ones film with Sir Cliff.
Speaking to the Evening News ahead of a Hit Parade Heroes concert in 2010, Mr Harris said the Futurist was a jewel in Scarborough’s crown that must be retained.
He added: “The Futurist is just too historic to close down and if it goes it will be another sad loss of a great venue to perform in.
“People still enjoy live shows so I don’t see any reason in closing it.
“The Futurist is a real theatre with great heritage and it’s got a lot of character about it.
“They should just leave it alone.”

I read the news today, oh boy
Thursday, February 16, 2012 at 06:27 PMA genuine rock legend, may he Rest In Peace. Please keep the event dignified, and make sure all the cash goes to Cancer Research UK. And not to any silly campaign about the Futurist.
