Classic sounds of Partisans
COMING up at Scarborough Jazz at the Cask are acclaimed quartet Partisans tonight and Ron Burnett and Greg Wadman next Wednesday.
The highly praised Partisans will be playing tracks from their fourth CD as part of a tour financed with a Jazz Services grant.
Julien Siegel (saxes), Phil Robson (guitar), Thad Kelly (bass) and Gene Calderazzo (drums) have been playing for over a decade and have been lavished with praise.
Jazzwise magazine claims they have "played a central role in re-energising the whole Brit-jazz scene” and Radio 3's Jazz Line Up called them "one of the most exciting all-star experimental groups in jazz today".
The group won the gong for best ensemble in last year’s All Party Parliamen-tary jazz awards.
“Their visceral, groove-based sound infuses their repertoire of be-bop, hard bop, early electric Miles Davis and ballads with sustained delicacy,” says promoter Dick Armstrong.
Tickets cost 6 on the door and 5 in advance.
Ron Burnett on trombone and vocals and Greg Wadman on trumpet and flugelhorn are a popular and entertaining pair who play an accessible repertoire drawn from 100 years of jazz history.
Ron began playing during his art student days in Hull, while Greg came up through the big bands. He played with the bands of Ray McVay and Ken MacIntosh, notching up many broadcasts on BBC radio and was in the backing bands of Frankie Vaughan and Val Doonican.
Ron has played with Humphrey Lyttelton, Bobby Wellins and Acker Bilk. He leads the York-based mainstream jazz Mardi Gras Band, which has Greg in the front line.
Ron and Greg will be backed by the Mike Gordon Trio.
Admission costs 2.
Both gigs are due to start at 8.45pm.
