CD reviews

TWO recent CDs which have landed on the Scarborough Evening News music desk.

New Again by Taking Back Sunday

FORMED in 1999 in Amityville, New York, this is the first release to feature contributions from Matt Fazzi – who replaced the departed vocalist and guitarist Fred Mascherino after he left to pursue a solo career in October 2007.

They certainly have a big and polished sound which makes you sit up and pay attention.

Right from opening title track you know they have honed their craft by putting in the hours supporting the likes of At The Drive In and Jimmy Eat World.

Highlights include Sink Into Me, Swing, Catholic Knees and Everything Must Go.

Apparently there was a lengthy American tour this spring so hopefully it will not be too long before we can see them in the UK.

Born to Ruin by Crazy Arm

THIS debut album from Plymouth's hard twang roots-punks has been a long time coming.

First venturing into the studio in late-2006 only to scrap the recordings a year later and start again.

And history repeated itself the following year when they started afresh for the third time with producer Peter Miles – who had previously worked with Sonic Boom Six, The King Blues and Failsafe.

It has been worth the wait and, drawing upon influences as diverse as Joni Mitchell, Led Zeppelin, Husker Du, Crass and Gene Vincent, the end result is a departure from where they were three years ago.

Highlights include the title track, the single release Broken By The Wheel, International Front and Christ In Concrete.

A band who proudly cling to their hardcore roots but are not afraid to throw the odd melodic refrain to the fore amid a swirl of feedback.
