Ben looks the part for his Hairspray role

SCARBOROUGH star Ben Ellis is dressed to impress for his West End debut in the stage production of the hit movie Hairspray.

In this first photo of him in the role of heart-throb Link Larkin, Ben certainly looks the part sporting a James Dean-style quiff, vibrant clothes and guitar.

The talented teenager will join an all-star cast, including Michael Ball, Mel Smith and Leanne Jones.

Ben made his name as a finalist on BBC TV talent show Any Dream Will Do when he tried to land the lead role in Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat.

He was the first finalist from the show, apart from winner Lee Mead, to win a West End role.

Hairspray is based on the 1988 John Waters movie of the same name and, while on Broadway, was critically acclaimed and lauded with awards. It has been re-adapted as a Hollywood film starring John Travolta and Michelle Pfeiffer. It is set in Baltimore in 1962, and tells the story of Tracy Turnblad, “a big girl with big hair and an even bigger heart” and her dreams of dancing fame.

The show is at the Shaftesbury Theatre and opens on October 11.
