Arts trail in the pipeline
MOVES are underway to launch an arts trail in Scarborough promoting a range of cultural activities throughout the town.
The scheme involves putting up interpretation boards around Scarborough highlighting different areas of interest and heritage.
The idea for the arts trail has been put forward by the Scarborough Arts and Culture Forum which has about 70 members and meets once a month.
Scarborough Council’s central urban area committee has awarded the forum a grant of 1,000 towards the cost of examining the feasibility of the scheme.
A report to the committee says: “The aim of the project is to develop an arts trail for Scarborough which will promote a whole range of exciting arts and cultural activities and buildings.
“It will be collectively promoted in a creative map of Scarborough leaflet which will give residents and visitors an exciting trail of activities to visit.
“The existing cultural buildings such as the Rotunda, Art Gallery, Stephen Joseph Theatre and Creative Industries Centre are supportive of the project and are keen to get involved.
“Similarly other art forms are very interested in taking part in the project and the benefit of such as trail is that it can promote artists from the performing and visual arts as well as those from the literary field.
“The group is also investigating if it is possible to add in new forms of technology into the trail such as phone texts or MP3 and iPod interpretations to that it will assist in reaching out to younger people and new audiences.”
The report says a lot of the work could involve engaging the local community, including children and young people, particularly in the Castle Ward.
