Amazing gig in store at Cask

EVERY Christmas one of the UK's most prestigious venues – the Pizza Express Jazz Club in the West End of London – plays host to one of the world's most successful jazz groups, Acoustic Alchemy.

Tickets for every night of the season normally cost 30 per person. Or 125 on New Year’s Eve, when the band format changes and Acoustic Alchemy transforms into a highly entertaining funk band known as G Funk.

Both Acoustic Alchemy and G Funk feature some of the most respected musicians on the planet.

They include Miles Gilderdale (Gibson guitarist of the year in 2002) and Greg Grainger (drummer of choice for Whitney Houston, Carlos Santana, Paul Rodgers and Buddy Guy), who are playing at Scarborough Blues Club on December 1.

In addition to being a member of Acoustic Alchemy and a multi Grammy award nominee, Miles is a life-long blues enthusiast. He lives in York and when not touring the world as part of his day job, he regularly appears on the North-East blues circuit, playing to large audiences of appreciative blues enthusiasts.

“Earlier this year I appeared as a guest at the blues club and was extremely impressed,” he explains. “It's really cool with its vibrant mix of supporters from young to old. I love the ethos. It’s extremely progressive compared with many blues clubs, which are often no more than half-hearted meet-ups in scruffy smoke rooms in tragic pubs. Sad but true.”

Miles, Greg and other musicians including Unkel B, a phenomenal bass player and former trombonist with one of Miles’ old bands, Zoot and the Roots, intend to enjoy themselves in the relaxed surroundings of this friendly club.

They will be treating the audience to a heady mixture of blues, funk and rock. The gig will be informal, involving improvisation rather than weeks of planning and rehearsals.

“But, bearing in mind the experience and skills of all those involved, it should by quite a night,” says organiser Mark Horsley.

“I couldn’t believe it when Miles sent me an email from America offering to bring these amazing musicians to our club,” says Mark. “The thought of one of the most sought after drummers in the world playing alongside one of the UK’s most talented guitarists, here in our little club, is pretty unbelievable.”

Greg Grainger has performed alongside many monsters of rock, blues and jazz. A couple of weeks ago he was playing with Buddy Guy, Mark Tremonti and Carlos Santana. He has backed Paul Rogers of Free, Bad Company, Queen and jazz figures such as legendary Hammond player Jimmy Smith.

Tickets cost 10 and can be bought at Mojo’s or by ringing 07956 925925.
