DRAGONS were springing up across the town yesterday as children celebrated the first day of Chinese New Year.
Youngsters at nurseries got in to the spirit of the event by learning about the Chinese culture and taking part in traditional games and activities.
Children at Buckets and Spades Day Nursery, in Victoria Road, made paper lanterns to decorate the nursery, as well as making spring rolls to eat.
Lisa Chesterfield, deputy manager at the nursery said: “The children also had the opportunity to use chopsticks, which were kindly donated by a parent, to eat some noodles.
“Everyone had so much fun learning about this Chinese tradition.”

Happy Jays Nursery, in Hopper Hill Road, was also home to a Chinese New Year party as staff and children made a giant dragon before dancing with it around the nursery.
Louise Goodger, Happy Jays owner, said: “Everyone dressed in red because that is a lucky colour for Chinese New Year.
“The children were also tasting some typical Chinese food. They had fried sea weed, spring rolls, noodles and rice.
“We also sang New Year songs and learnt how to say happy New Year in Chinese.
“Everyone has enjoyed the celebrations very much, and the children loved learning about the Chinese culture.”
