Bayonetta - Review

The story of Bayonetta focuses on the title character herself. Bayonetta 20 years ago woke up in a casket at the bottom of a lake and ever since her past has been nothing but a big blur.

All she knows is that she is a witch and that she must punish the divine to remain in the world. Now I won't get into the storyline but I will tell you that it was not what I expected it to be, and it actually turned out to be a pretty good story. I enjoyed the characters and world quite a bit and would like to see a sequel exploring them even more.

Graphically the game is beautiful. There are little touches of detail all over the game that just make it a pleasure to look at. Bayonetta's sprouting butterfly wings when she double jumps or even the countless little butterfly's that spring forth from the ground when Bayonetta lands. Beautiful colors and incredible style are the norm.

Voice acting is incredibly well done. Bayonetta sounds sassy and sexy while fighting but when it's time to tone things down a bit she is capable of sounding cool and collected and even intelligent at times.

Now lets get into the games heart and soul; The combat. Bayonetta is unique in that she doesn't just acquire new weapons and use them. She is capable of equipping a weapon on both her hands and her feet. This allows for incredibly innovative combat styles and extreme combos.

Mixing up weapons is a great way to keep the game fresh and fun, and trust me, there are plenty of weapons to get to grips with, from Bayonetta's famous pistols Scarborough Fair to weapons like Katana, Claws and Whips.

Combat is incredibly fast and fluid and players will need to stay on their toes if they want to survive. Bayonetta is not a simple hack and slash. You need to constantly be on alert and be ready to dodge attacks with a flick of the right trigger. Doing so will make Bayonetta cartwheel or spin out of the way of an oncoming attack and timing it just at the last second will allow Bayonetta to enter "Witch Time," a time during which Bayonetta's enemies slow down allowing her to punish them.

The mastering of "Witch Time" is an absolute must, as you will die alot if you dont learn how to use it. Shaking up combat even more are the addition of Torture Attacks. When Bayonetta's magic reaches a certain point she can unleash a powerful attack. These range from a Guillotine to a giant spiked wheel to an iron maiden. They will more often than not kill an enemy instantly, however some enemies will survive but take heavy damage.

There are also several accessories throughout the game that will modify Bayonettas abilities. These items can do things such as allow Bayonetta to regain health by taunting a enemy or Summon little helpers to 'help' dispatch enemies. Consumable items also make a appearance here in the form of Lolly pops. Yes, you read that right, Bayonetta can regain a bit of health or magic by sucking on lolly pops. It's quite humorous to say the least.

Boss battles are epic as they have you fighting enemies 100 times the size of Bayonetta herself. At first you will wonder how to defeat something that big, but once you work it out the fights are incredibly fun, not only because of the combat but because of the end sequences in which Bayonetta summons giant beasts to finish off her enemies. These moments are over the top fun and a satisfying end to a giant boss fight.

At the end of the day it's easy to see why Bayonetta is the best pure action game of this generation. Don't let the over the top presentation fool you. Bayonetta has incredibly deep combat and it's also lots and lots of fun. In this current drought of anticipated releases, Bayonetta will certainly provide a decent fix, and if youre a fan of the Devil May Cry series this is an absolute must own.

OVERALL SCORE - 8 - 10 Excellent Graphics, Combat and Presentation. Although not every gamers cup of tea, this is a worthy purchase with not much else due on the shelves.
