ROAD safety must be the overriding issue in the issue of creating a site for the travellers to the Seamer Fair.
My opposition to the Stoney Haggs Road site is not on the grounds of “NIMBY-ism”, as suggested by a correspondent recently, but on the grounds of the safety of the many motorists who use this road, linking, as it does, Seamer and Racecourse Road, and
, of course, the children from the Lindsay Parkinson estate roads, walking to and from school.
The fact that hedgerows have had to be removed at the junction of Seamer Moor Road – Dicky Harper’s Lane – and Stoney Haggs Road, to improve safety, underlines the worries the residents, parish council and Seamer's representatives on Scarborough Borough and North Yorkshire County Council, have, regarding the proposal to designate this site for the travellers. Those concerns are aggravated by the potentially dangerous access to the site.
The road cannot accommodate more traffic, as would be generated by the travellers, with their vehicles, caravans, and more than likely, pony trotting.
Indeed the safety of the travellers and their ponies is of equal importance.
When there is an ideal site available, with no safety risk, and well away from houses, at High Eastfield Farm, it is foolhardy to say the least that Stoney Haggs Road should be considered a suitable site.
