Time for a break from continental market

NOW that the "continental" market has gone, can I make a public plea for it not to come back for a while?
The bank holiday visit was marginally better than the last, when the stall-holders packed up because of the weather, but it was a shadow of what we saw the first time it came.

The stalls are dull, over-priced, and, if I wasn’t an advocate of cycli
ng and walking wherever possible, I’d suggest it would be almost as cheap to go to France for the produce.

Continental? Mon oeil. It’s French through and through, bar one British stall!

We had beautiful weather this weekend, but there were fewer stalls than ever.

I spotted an assistant at the stall selling “continental” hot dogs accidentally drop his warmed-up buns on the street, pick ‘em up and chuck them back in the bread basket.

It’s time to look for a new market, the sort of thing we’re used to when we visit the real Europe.

The trouble is, you don’t have to go even that far. You can find much better 40-odd miles down the road in York.

Scarborough’s trying hard to stay at the top of the tourist charts and looking great for all that.

We can’t afford to lose tourists to our rivals, and we can’t afford to pay that much for fruit and veg that isn’t even organic.
