I support the comments made in your recent editorial regarding the importance of preserving the fishing heritage of Scarborough.
I first visited Scarborough nineteen years ago and I was fascinated by the rich history of Scar- borough and in particular its maritime and fishing heritage. I wanted to find out more about this aspect of Scarborough’s history and I was amazed to di
scover that there is no dedicated site which preserves and celebrates this crucial aspect of Scarborough’s history.

Today, Scarborough still does not have such a centre. I would urge all those who are proud of Scarborough and its fishing tradition to petition for the establishment of a maritime and fishing heritage centre. The fishing history of Scarborough is worth preserving. It is an integral part of Scarborough’s history which deserves to be acknowledged so that we can celebrate the contribution it has made to the town.

In a competitive trading environment the development of a maritime and fishing heritage centre would provide the Scarborough tourism industry with another reason to encourage visitors to the town. It makes sense for businesses in Scarborough to support the preservation of the history of the fishing industry.

This great legacy will die if it is not nurtured – let’s keep it alive.

Come on Scarborough – help!
