In response to the devastation caused by the Cyclone Nargis in Burma, Christian Aid has launched an appeal to raise £2million. We are also part of the wider coalition of charities that has launched an appeal to raise funds.
It is feared that up to 100,000 have died. An estimated one million people are also reportedly homeless and in dire need of emergency help. Please donate what you can to our Burma Appeal.
Despite concerns over the Burmese government limiting acce
ss to aid agencies, your donations will make a difference on the ground. Christian Aid has been working in Burma for over 20 years and has developed close relationships with our local Burmese partners, all of which have experience of working in the affected areas. Christian Aid and their partners are also able to increase current activities quite significantly. As we saw after the 2004 Tsunami, it will take many months, even years, to rebuild after a disaster of this scale.
There are thousands of human and animal bodies stilll scattered across the affected area. This is adding to concerns that the lives of survivors are increasingly at risk of disease. Food shortages will also be a major problem throughout the country over the coming months as rice paddies have been inundated with saltwater. In the longer term there will be the need to rebuild houses, create early warning systems and improve infrastructure that can withstand cyclones.
Christian Aid has already committed funds to local partners to carry out relief work. However, we urgently need to raise £2million.
What your donation can do:
l £4 could provide water purification tablets for 10 people for one day ( 3 litres per person)
l £10 could provide a relief kit for a family that would include some food, water purification tablets and medicines.
l £40 could pay for an early-warning system such as loudspeakers and flags for a community.
l £100 could help pay towards materials for temporary shelters.
Please give generously. Cheques made payable to “Christian Aid” should be sent to the Treasurer of Scarborough Christian Aid Mr Derek Sedman, 22 The Copse, Woodlands Vale, Scarborough, YO12 5HG, marking the envelope Burma Cyclone Appeal.
