Ornate facades are a sad loss

I RECENTLY watched a programme of Scarborough in the 1950s-60s.
What a wonderful place it used to be – the outdoor swimming pools where everyone could enjoy the oudoor life, the lovely lifts, the Corner Cafe, the outdoor theatre, what treasures we had.

And all for progress, the beautiful places have now been r
eplaced. Beautiful hotels like Pavilion Hotel which stood magnificently as one came out of the Victorian railway station; now we see the most ugly concrete building.

The Balmoral Hotel, a wonderful place, Rowntrees with its wonderful shop windows they produced especially at Christmas, the Brunswick houses behind pulled down, the elite Marshall and Snelgrove where I was a window dresser, a beautiful ornate building, the amazing Opera House which we will never be able to restore now.

Other towns are restoring their old buildings.

Why didn't we do what Harrogate and other towns have done and keep the facade of all these lovely buildings?

Only the other month did I see somewhere in the south, where they have restored thier old outside swimming pool, which we could have done.

The only thing good about the council is the parks and garden section who do a wonderful job, if only we had the same man to look after Scarborough itself we would possibly still have our wonderful heritage.

I am very angry that so many of our treasures have been destroyed even though we wanted to keep the beautiful architecture of our town.
