I READ with great interest the letter by Mr Wright of Scalby with the information regarding the inventor of the traffic light system.
Living in a village as he does, with the occasional vehicle passing his door, he has no idea of the problems at the junction he refers to (Scalby Road-Throxenby Lane-Green Lane).
Possibly it may be an inconvenience for him when he wants to travel
to Scarborough and has to travel along Scalby Road; he could always go to the coast road and experience fewer lights.
I have lived on the corner of this junction for the last 30 years and have witnessed a very large number of minor accidents and near-misses.
I do have a much stronger connection with this junction as my father was killed in a road accident some 40 years ago when traffic was light. I also witnessed an elderly gentleman killed when trying to cross the road.
I would suggest Mr Wright can obtain some more up-to-date information regarding traffic travelling on these roads daily from Scarborough Borough Council; he will, I am sure, be amazed at the number of vehicles which use Scalby Road and Green Lane which is a major thoroughfare to the North side of Scarborough. Throxenby Lane has to cope with traffic from two large estates.
I would suggest Mr Wright brings a deckchair when schools resume and witness for himself the volume of traffic.
This junction feeds Scarborough Hospital, Sixth Form College, Scalby School, Graham School, Raincliffe School and Yorkshire Coast College.
