WHO decides where we have traffic lights or roundabouts? I get the impression that whoever makes that decision has never travelled anywhere else by road – perhaps they always travel by train!
During the late 1980s and 1990s I was travelling on a very regular basis from the East Coast (Scarborough) to the West Coast (Morecambe), sometimes two or three times a week. In several places along the route there were many hold-ups at traffic light
s. During the years I was travelling several sets of traffic lights were replaced by roundabouts, this was around the time that Scarborough had roundabouts removed and traffic lights put in their place, namely Falsgrave and Odeon roundabouts.

Where traffic lights had been removed and roundabouts put in their place there was never any hold-ups and on average the journey time was cut by about an hour.

I have gone down Somerset Terrace and on Northway when the traffic lights have been out of action and drivers use the junctions as if there had been roundabouts and the traffic flowed freely with no hold-ups.

I have spoken to people from other parts of the country who have said that their towns have had roundabouts to replace traffic lights and there have been no hold-ups since.

So come on Scarborough Council or North Yorkshire County Council, whoever is responsible, and have another think before you drive everyone away from Scarbor-ough.
