AS a founder member of Scarborough Mencap Society, which was formed 50 years ago, I wish to say what an appalling and cruel decision the Social Services Department of North Yorkshire County Council has taken with regard to the proposed closing of the two Eastfield day centres for adults with learning difficulties.
Even more disgusting is the devious way this has been done over a period of three years, without any discussion with any of the parents.

These dear people do not want to be involved in local community activities in isolation from each other, but rather in groups with their friends and familiar faces all together, which is what they have been doing for so many years.

The “person-centred” reviews being carried out are mostly useless, as most of them cannot speak for themselves about their likes and dislikes and wishes – hence the parents fighting for justice.

The adult training centre has been recently very well fitted out after a fire – what is it now going to be used for after all this expense, has it already been earmarked for something else?

It is a great pity that the Elder Tree Club is being broken up to make way for the severely handicapped, when everybody would be happier if things were left as they already are.

O Appleton
