SCARBOROUGH'S mayor and the Evening News today joined forces in an appeal to help a soldier who lost both legs in an explosion in Afghanistan.
The campaign hopes to raise thousands of pounds for Tom Davis-Lawlor, 19, of Bracken Hill, in Barrowcliff, who was injured while on foot patrol in Bashran, Helmand Province.

A generous anonymous Scarborough businessman yesterday donated £10,000 to
Tom, who is with the 2nd Battalion The Yorkshire Regiment (The Green Howards).

The businessman told the Evening News: "The thought of that young lad losing his legs is terrible. I hope we can do what we can to help him."

Residents in Barrowcliff have donated nearly £500 to the fund. Tom is now recovering at Selly Oak Hospital in Birmingham.

Mayor Cllr Bill Chatt, said: "I think it is so important that we all help Tom.

"He is one of our lads. He went to some of our schools. He is one of our own and he has done us proud.

"It is important that he leads a normal life. This money will help that.

"The first thing we plan to do is buy a laptop for him and one for his mum Josie. At the moment Josie cannot stay with him in Birmingham. She lives in Scarborough and has her job and children to look after.

"We want to buy them both laptops with web cameras so they can speak to each other whenever they like. It is important that he speaks to his mum as often as he can."

come on scarborough show your true colours for a lad that deserves this help.
businesses, it shouldnt be too hard for one of you to "donate" 2 fully rigged up laptops for his family to communicate with him,and BT, what about giving unlimited internet access as part of your donation to the residents of the town for the fire in the exchange years ago, im sure this family and indeed the grandparents of Tom never saw a penny then nor asked for any, then the money donated by the people can go directly to the family to help with what the young man needs for the rest of his life.
Time to give the family our support and help if you can.

God Bless this brave young man. Lets hope the business people in the town of Scarborough do their bit to assist this young man and his family and get behind this fundraising campaign. I will be doing my best as will most ordinary folk in this small town.My heart goes out to him and all the other brave men and women out in that awful place.
