The latest off-road offering in the MX series from THQ, finally arrives this week on Xbox 360 and PS3. With a host of new features, this a definite improvement on earlier titles.

The first major improvement you will notice is in the graphics and presentation. The vehicle models are spectacular, with every inch of machinery lovingly detailed in high def. Each race is set around stunning terrains and backgrounds, ranging fro
m deserts and forests, to snow.

The only real issue I had with these amazing graphics and scenery, was the lack of a full race replay feature. This may just be a personal grip, however the amazing graphics do deserve a replay feature, complete with camera and zoom functions, to do them complete justice.
And its on these terrains where you will first experience the impressive terrain deformation technology. As the tyres of your MX or ATV rip up the ground, this will have an effect on the terrain, so much so that next time round you could see yourself exited from the seat of your ride by a rut you created a lap ago. This only adds to the realism of the racing here.

Another major improvement comes from the revised control system. There is now the inclusion of dual stick driving, allowing the vehicle to be controlled with one stick, while the rider is controlled with the other.

At first, this new control system takes some getting used to, but once mastered allows you to pull off some amazing tricks, aswell as maximising jumps and turns. There are plenty of different off road vehicles for you to try, ranging from bikes and buggies to more focused off roaders, each with different handling characteristics.

The game offers a variety of game modes which allow you to race through Champion Sport Track, Free Ride, Freestyle, Nationals, Omni-cross, Waypoint and Supercross, in both standard single player and multiplayer – which lets you race against 11 others online.

Other Online modes add playability to the title, with fun mini games such as Tag, a traditional 'chase' game, and Snake, a version of the original Snake game from Mobiles some years ago. Of course there is the traditional Career Mode, which is an excellent way to get to grips with the control and handling.

8.5 / 10 - MX vs ATV Reflex is a fun game that adds some very neat touches to the off road series, and then polishes them with a shiny High-Def cloth. A slightly steep learning curve for the new control system shouldn't put anyone off, as you will soon be pulling off some amazing tricks. Awesome!!
